One of the most important things that cheerleaders should do when cheering at a sporting event, is to make sure you watch the game! You should organize your cheers and chants to fit defense, offense and general spirit. The following is a brief overview to get you started:
Offense: Offense is when your team HAS the ball and is trying to SCORE. You should do chants that talk about scoring and moving the ball.
Defense: Defense is when your team DOES NOT have the ball and wants to get the ball back. A good way to remember this is that the word defense starts with the letter "D" and "does not have the ball" also starts with the letter "D". Defense chants talk about "take that ball away", "hold that line" or "sack that quarterback".
Spirit Chants: General spirit chants can be used any time during the game. These chants include general motivation and team spirit.
