How to Make Your Cheerleading Practices More Fun!

Would you love some fun ideas to get your team excited?!  How about some great ideas for your upcoming practices? Check these out and get started:

1. Color Team Day:  Have a practice where the entire team wears a specific color.  For example, next week’s practice can be Pink day or Red day.  Also, you can have your entire team where the same color all day at school to reinforce team unity.
2. Color Stunt Group Day:  Have a practice where the each stunt group wears a specific color.  For example, one group can wear red while other groups can wear pink, blue, green and yellow.
3. Crazy Sock Day:  Have everyone where crazy or mix-matched socks.
4. TWIN Day:  Pair up your athletes and have them dress like twins at your next practice  You can use this to improve team unity as you can select the pairs and put people together that may have not really spent a lot of time together.  At the end of the practice have the twins do a little “fashion show” for the team and you can give out awards for the most creative;  awards can include lolly pops, cheer money, etc..
5. More Theme Day Ideas:  Here are some other themes that you can use at your practice:

• Disney Shirt Day
• Super Hero / Wonder Woman Day
• Polka Dots Day
• Bow Day – wear as many bows as you can.
• Crazy Bow Day
• Tie Die Day – Wear Tie Die shirts, socks, bows, shorts, etc.
• Heart Day – wear as many hearts as you can.
• Star day – wear as many stars as you can.

6. Give Back Day:  At the end of practice, take 30 to 45 minutes to do a community service project.  Ideas include to make toys for the animals at the humane society or to make birthday cards for a homeless shelter.

Team Building Ideas to Create a Strong Cheerleading Team - How to Motivate Cheerleaders

Are you a Cheerleading Coach looking for some great ideas and games to improve and motivate your team? Team building activities are a MUST for ALL teams to help improve the relationships between your team members.

So when should you incorporate a team building activity? A good rule of thumb is to try and do 1 small 5 minute game each practice to encourage teammates that don’t normally talk to interact and to do a large, out of practice, team building activity at least once per month. Here are some ideas to start with:

Make a New Friend Game

Have 2 cheerleaders sit together that do not normally talk and have them find ourt3 things that they have in common. Once you give the team 5 minutes for this activity, have the 2 cheerleaders stand up and introduce each other to the team and reveal what they have in common.

Compliment Game

Have your team sit in a circle. Each athlete stands up and gives a compliment to the person next to them. This is a great way to build trust and confidence!

Get to Know You Game

Have 2 athletes stand next to each other. Give them 1 minute to notice EVERYTHING about each other. Then, have them stand back to back and then ask them some questions about their teammate like: What is their eye color, hair color, shoe lace color, what are they wearing, are they wearing jewelry, etc.

Back to Back

Girls must find a partner of close height, lock arms back to back, and sit on the ground with their legs straight out and try to stand back up. See which pair gets up the quickest.

The Human Knot

The team stands in a circle and everyone reaches out both hands and grabs someone else’s hands. The goal is to get the knot untangled without releasing anyone’s hands.

How to Coach Cheerleading - How to Get Your Team to Take Practice Seriously

Here is a question that we receive A LOT from cheerleading coaches: 

Q:  Help!  I am a new coach and I need some help in motivating my cheerleaders during practice and to get them to take it seriously. 

A:  This is a concern for EVERY Coach as you are not alone if you find yourself looking at your team half way through practice and asking them to pay attention, stop talking or to get back in formation – lol!  Here are some ideas to help get your girls motivated and interested in your practice:

1. Set Season and Daily Goals for your season and have your team set them with you. At the beginning of practice, remind your team of the season goals that THEY set and then set goals for that practice to help them stay focused on your outcome.  Athletes generally perform better if they know what they are working toward.
2. Give REWARDS!!!! At the beginning of practice, give your team a reward if they accomplish __________________ during your practice.  Here are reward examples:

• Everyone will receive a piece of candy if you get through your new chant with stunts.
• Your next practice will have a fun theme.
• Play a game or do a fun team building activity.
• Give out a “Spirit Stick” or team Mascot Stuffed Animal to take home to the most outstanding cheerleader that day.

Referencing the cheerleading industry, what is the difference between a team that is in the top 10 national rankings every year ( even with new members ) and those who are not?  Is it skills, facility or training – yes and no.  What these team members have, including the new ones, is an EXPECTATION that they will be in the top 10 again.  With this expectation, they have already DECIDED to be there again and will work with this belief to make it happen until it is realized.

Accordingly, the primary difference between people who are living their dreams and those who are not, is that they first have DECIDED to make it happen.  Then, they followed their decision up with an unwavering    commitment, massive action, clarity of focus and expectation, and did not stop until it was realized!

So how can you do it too?  Just follow the CIC Success Formula:

Top Tips for your Cheerleading Summer Camp Experience

While at Cheer Summer Camp, you will have the opportunity to learn SO MUCH  material and it may be overwhelming for a lot of your team.  Here are some tips from our Experts to help you get as much as you can out of your cheer classes:

• Remind your squad that everyone is learning, mistakes are expected and that you rarely get things on the first try so KEEP TRYING!
• Keep the learning portion light and positive.  Give out compliments, rewards and make the learning FUN!
• When learning dances, split up your team and send a small delegation to each of the routines as it is difficult to remember 2 or more routines, plus cheers, stunts etc. For example, if you send 5 girls to the hip hop dance and 5 different girls to the fight song, you are more likely to come back home with girls who will remember all of the curriculum.
• Video tape as much of the curriculum as you can so you can reference it and refresh your memory at practice.
• Keep a journal (and ask your cheerleaders to keep a journal as well) to take notes of what you are learning, your thoughts and how you are going to incorporate the new skills into your season.

How to Make the Most of Your Cheerleading Summer Camp

Are your going to Cheer Camp this Summer?  Here are some tip that will maximize your progress at camp:

• Know your teams starting skill levels; this includes stunting, tumbling, dance and leadership skills.

• Set some goals with your team about where you are and what you would like to accomplish at camp.

• When you set your goals, try to narrow them down to at most 2 main goals in each cheer skill that you want to get out of camp. For example, you want to learn 2 big stunting sequences and 2 dances.
• Once you have set your team goals, bring them to camp to remind your team of why you are there. Also, you can share your goals with the camp staff so when you have some one on one practice time with the staff, they can specifically help you.
