Cheerleading Coaching Tip: How to Motivate Your Cheerleading Team

Are your looking for some great tips to motivate your team?  Here are some tips to try:

1. Set your goals together as a team! At your first team meeting, have everyone give their ideas on what you would like to accomplish as a team.  Once you have a list, have the team vote on them then pick your top 3 to 5 for the season.  Goals can include:

• Stunt Goals
• Attending a Competition
• Community Service Goals
• School Spirit / Involvement Goals
• Pep Rally Attendance
• Fundraising Goals

2. Once you have your top goals for the season, discuss as a team, what the PLAN is and the steps you are going to take to achieve that goal.
3. Make a Goals Chart or Vision Board so the girls can visually see what they have set and the progress they have made.
4. At the beginning of every practice, remind your team of the goals THEY have set for themselves and talk about progress.
5. REWARD the team for their progress.
6. Give encouragement! Everyone loves recognition for their hard work :-)
   
7. Do Team Building Activities to strengthen relationships on the team.
8. Make sure practice is FUN! This can include theme practices and games.
9. Set up Cheer Pals within the team or Big Sister and Little Sister pairs.

Beginning Cheerleading Stunts - Where Should You Get Started and How Do Your Progress Your Stunting Skills

One question that we get A LOT has to do with beginning stunts and where to begin with stunting; here is a question from Coach Lisa from Cleveland Ohio:

"... I am a Pee Wee Coach and I need some stunts that my girls can do and do SAFELY. What stunts should I begin with and when should I progress with them?"

1. We suggest that you start with the perfect beginning stunt, the Pony Mount, as it is super simple and a great way to master the 3 parts of a stunt ( base, flyer, and spotter ). For all of the details on How to Do a Pony Mount, CLICK HERE.
2. The next stunt you should teach your team is the Double Thigh Stand. This stunt is SO VERSITILE that you can use it for all of your routines and just add the variations and it looks GREAT! Also, this stunt is great to teach your flyers how to climb as well as teaching your bases to hold your flyer and learn dismounts. 3. Beginning Stunt Progression: The best way to decide when to progress to the next stunt is to MASTER your current level stunt and then move on. For example, when you MASTER your basic Double Thigh Stand, then you can start Double Thigh Stand variations like the L Stand, Liberty Stand and more.

So how do you know you have mastered your stunt?

1. When your flyer is tight and does not wobble while in the stunt. Also she lands with both feet together and is clean all the way through the stunt.
2. Your bases should be REALLY STEADY and not wobble. They should be comfortable with the flyer climbing on them and feel comfortable with the dismount.
3. When ALL of the members of your stunt group what to try something new and are comfortable with their positions.

The most important tip to remember about stunting is to not compare your team to any other team. Just focus on where your team is and continue to make progress. With proper technique, patience and A LOT of practice, you will master your stunts and do it safely!

Cheerleading Jumps Mistakes and Solutions to Improve Your Jumps TODAY!

Do you want to improve your cheerleading jumps?  We've got you!  Check out these top 9 common jump mistakes and solutions to help you improve your jump TODAY! 

1.  Practicing with bad habits: Remember, if you want perfect jumps, practice is not enough.  When you practice you MUST use proper skill and technique to create awesome jumps!

 

2.  Starting with your feet apart: When you start with your feet together, you will get the most power and lift off the floor;  also having your feet together looks clean when you perform jumps as a team.

 

3.  Using a double prep: Tendencies to “double-bounce” or add an extra bend of the knees before taking the big dip is a big disadvantage to your success.  When you do this, you are cutting off momentum, wasting energy, and your timing will be off with the rest of your team.

 

4.  Flexing your feet: For ALL of your jumps, please keep your toes pointed!  Whether your are doing jumps at tryouts, a game or during a competition, jumping with pointed toes ALWAYS looks better and will get you higher marks!

 

5.  Dropping your chest: Dropping your chest lowers your jumps, it’s that simple.  Keep your chest up in all of your jumps and show off your gorgeous smile and good form to the crowd.

 

6.  Reaching down to your toes: When you reach down toward your toes, you automatically bring your chest down and lower your jumps.  ALWAYS bring your legs UP to your hands.

 

7.  Creating a bend in your legs on the way down: To have great and safe landings, you will need to snap your legs and feet together after your jump.  Bending your legs on the way down looks bad and will through off your jump.  Remember, snap your legs up and then snap them down to keep it clean!

 

8.  Landing stiff and feet apart:  Always land with your feet together and with your knees bent to absorb your landings. Do this EVERY time to save your joints from pain and injury.

 

9.  Having sloppy arm motions: Last but not least, don’t forget about good motion technique while performing your jumps. Be sure your arm motions are just as sharp and snappy as your cheerleading jumps!

Team Building Ideas to Create a Strong Cheerleading Team - How to Motivate Cheerleaders

Are you a Cheerleading Coach looking for some great ideas and games to improve and motivate your team? Team building activities are a MUST for ALL teams to help improve the relationships between your team members.

So when should you incorporate a team building activity? A good rule of thumb is to try and do 1 small 5 minute game each practice to encourage teammates that don’t normally talk to interact and to do a large, out of practice, team building activity at least once per month. Here are some ideas to start with:

Make a New Friend Game

Have 2 cheerleaders sit together that do not normally talk and have them find ourt3 things that they have in common. Once you give the team 5 minutes for this activity, have the 2 cheerleaders stand up and introduce each other to the team and reveal what they have in common.

Compliment Game

Have your team sit in a circle. Each athlete stands up and gives a compliment to the person next to them. This is a great way to build trust and confidence!

Get to Know You Game

Have 2 athletes stand next to each other. Give them 1 minute to notice EVERYTHING about each other. Then, have them stand back to back and then ask them some questions about their teammate like: What is their eye color, hair color, shoe lace color, what are they wearing, are they wearing jewelry, etc.

Back to Back

Girls must find a partner of close height, lock arms back to back, and sit on the ground with their legs straight out and try to stand back up. See which pair gets up the quickest.

The Human Knot

The team stands in a circle and everyone reaches out both hands and grabs someone else’s hands. The goal is to get the knot untangled without releasing anyone’s hands.
